CarparkShark is a static website. It has no accounts, no sign-in, and no comments. We do not sell data. The site is funded by advertising, and the advertising provider may use cookies as described below; CarparkShark itself does not build profiles of visitors.
This page explains what limited information is collected when you use the site, and your rights under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Who is responsible
CarparkShark is the data controller for the information described below. You can contact us about anything on this page at [email protected].
What we collect
Analytics
CarparkShark uses Matomo to understand which pages are visited and how the site is used. Matomo is an analytics service we operate ourselves rather than a third-party vendor.
Matomo records information such as:
- The pages you visit on CarparkShark and the order in which you visit them.
- The approximate location derived from your IP address (typically city or region).
- Your device type, browser, operating system, and screen size.
- The referring page that brought you to the site.
This information is used in aggregate to understand how the site is performing and where to improve it. It is not used to identify you personally and it is not shared with advertisers or with Google.
Cookies and similar technologies
The analytics tag may set first-party cookies in your browser to distinguish a returning visit from a new one. These cookies do not contain personal information.
Advertising
CarparkShark shows advertising served by Google AdSense on car park pages and town pages. Google, and the advertising partners it works with, act as third-party vendors and use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, to measure them, and — where you have consented — to personalise them based on your visits to this and other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet.
- How Google uses information from sites that use its services is explained at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by Google at Google Ads Settings, and of personalised advertising by other vendors at www.aboutads.info or www.youronlinechoices.eu.
Consent. If you visit from the UK or the European Economic Area you will see a consent message, provided by Google, before any advertising cookie is set. You can decline, in which case Google serves ads that do not use cookies or personal data for personalisation. You can change your choice at any time by clearing this site’s cookies, after which the message is shown again.
Advertising revenue is what pays for the site. We do not choose or endorse individual advertisers, and an advert appearing on a car park page is not a recommendation by CarparkShark.
Server logs
The server that hosts CarparkShark and the tile server that delivers map imagery keeps standard access logs. These typically contain IP addresses, timestamps, and the URLs requested. They are used to operate and protect the service and are retained for a short period.
What we do not collect
CarparkShark does not ask for or store names, email addresses, payment details, or any other personal information from visitors. The only personal data we hold is whatever you choose to send us by email.
Third parties
- OpenStreetMap — when you load a car park page, your browser fetches map tiles from our tile server. The underlying map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and used under the Open Database Licence.
- Google AdSense — see Advertising above. Google is an independent controller of the data it collects through its advertising cookies; its privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
- Hosting and CDN providers — the static site and analytics service are hosted on standard internet infrastructure. Their providers may process IP addresses to deliver the content.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask what personal data, if any, we hold about you;
- ask us to correct inaccurate data;
- ask us to delete data we hold about you;
- object to processing or restrict it;
- complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Because we do not maintain accounts or other identifiers tied to individuals, the practical scope of these rights on CarparkShark is narrow — but if you have a concern, please email us at [email protected] and we will respond.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to how the site collects or uses data, we will update this page and change the “last updated” date at the top.
